The Church of the Messiah is shown in flames in this view of the Baltimore fire of February 1904. The blaze began in the downtown district on February 7 and burned for roughly thirty hours, destroying much of the city's commercial core. Crews from other cities, including Philadelphia and New York, came to help local firefighters contain it. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed American cities and landmarks in the early 1900s, recorded scenes like this one, which show how quickly a fire of that scale could overtake a city's buildings.
