The title places this glass negative on North Charles Street during the Great Baltimore Fire, which broke out in February 1904 and burned for roughly thirty hours through the city's commercial core. The National Photo Company, a firm that documented American cities for commercial sale, made many views of the disaster's aftermath, and its work helped record the scale of the loss. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural deterioration of its original coating, and they are now part of how the image looks.
