A special B&O train, the Flyer, is the focus of this picture. It carried Washington firefighters to Baltimore in 31 minutes to help fight the Great Baltimore Fire of February 1904. That blaze broke out in the city's commercial core and burned for roughly thirty hours, destroying much of downtown. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented the capital and its surroundings in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative, which shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of its original coating.
