This view records the southwestern limit of the fire at Liberty and Lombard streets, the point where the blaze stopped advancing through downtown Baltimore. The Great Baltimore Fire began on February 7, 1904, and burned for roughly thirty hours, destroying more than 1,500 buildings in the commercial core. Fire companies from Washington, Philadelphia, and other cities were sent by rail to help, a sign of how far the flames had spread. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm known for its glass-plate negatives of American cities, so it shows the ruins as a working commercial photographer documented them.
