Liberty Street, shown here in a view dated 1904, lies in the downtown blocks that the Great Baltimore Fire swept through that February. The fire began on February 7 and burned for roughly thirty hours, destroying about 1,500 buildings in the city's commercial core. The National Photo Company, a firm that documented American cities in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative, and its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of the original coating, which lends the scene a faded, aged quality.
