Few pictures show the men behind the Great Baltimore Fire as directly as this glass negative, which pairs Chief Belt and Marshal Bieber with firemen who traveled from Washington, D.C. to help. The fire broke out in Baltimore's downtown on February 7, 1904, and burned for roughly 30 hours, destroying about 1,500 acres of the business district. Mutual aid from neighboring cities was central to the response, and the National Photo Company documented many American cities in this period. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of its original coatings.
