The ruins of the Guggenheimer & Weil building are the focus here, one of the many downtown structures reduced to shell walls in the Great Baltimore Fire, which broke out in early February 1904 and swept through the city's central business district for more than a day. The fire destroyed a large part of the commercial core, and photographs like this one recorded the scale of the loss. The caption card lists the date as March 19, but that date is unverified and likely does not match the fire's February timing. The photograph is credited to Joseph E. Henry.
