Few American cities bore the marks of a single disaster as plainly as Baltimore after its February 1904 fire, and this stereograph shows one stretch of the ruined downtown. The blaze broke out on February 7 and burned for roughly thirty hours, destroying much of the central business district, and firefighters blew up buildings in its path to stop it. Frozen hydrants and weak water pressure hampered the response, and companies arrived by rail from several neighboring cities. Stereo cards like this one, issued by the H.C. White Company, let viewers at home see the wreckage in three dimensions through a stereoscope.
