Rather than a general view of the city, this halftone shows the downtown fire that Baltimore remembers as the Great Baltimore Fire of February 1904, which burned for about thirty hours through the commercial core. The print reproduces a photoprint issued by Hochschild, Kohn & Co., a Baltimore department store, and the record gives 1948 as its date, though that date is unverified and may reflect when the reproduction was made. Halftone reproduction was a common way to turn photographs into printable images for newspapers and trade publications, so this picture records both the disaster and the way it was circulated afterward.
