Looking east along Baltimore Street from Liberty Street, this view shows the downtown blocks after the Great Baltimore Fire of February 1904, which began on the evening of February 7 and burned for more than a day. The fire destroyed roughly 1,500 acres of the city's commercial core, and cold weather and burst water mains hampered efforts to contain it. Crews from other cities, including New York and Philadelphia, arrived by rail to help, and crews used dynamite to clear buildings in the fire's path. The print carries the imprint of Langill, a New York publisher that sold views of disasters and city scenes to a wide audience.
