Two-humped Bactrian camels, rather than the one-humped dromedaries more often seen in American menageries, are the subject of this view of Druid Hill Park in Baltimore. The park, laid out in the nineteenth century as one of the city's largest public green spaces, included an animal enclosure that drew families on weekends. The image is an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative made around 1906 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that produced large numbers of travel views of American cities, parks and landmarks for sale to the public. Its record notes that the negative was a gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
