Fort Federal Hill sat on the high ground above the harbor in south Baltimore, and its guns looked down over the city's streets and wharves. Federal troops built and garrisoned it during the early years of the Civil War, when Maryland's loyalty to the Union was uncertain and Baltimore was a key rail and port city between North and South. Lithographs like this one, issued by the Baltimore firm E. Sachse & Co., were popular souvenirs that let viewers see the fort's position and its commanding view. The color printing suggests a commercial piece meant for a broad public eager to see the defenses that kept the city in Union hands.
