Fort McHenry, the star-shaped brick fort guarding Baltimore Harbor, is shown here as a garrison held by the 3rd Battalion of Rifles of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia. The fort had gained lasting fame during the War of 1812, when its bombardment in September 1814 inspired Francis Scott Key to write "The Star-Spangled Banner." In 1861, with Maryland a divided border state and secessionist feeling strong in Baltimore, Union forces took control of the fort to keep the city and the harbor under federal watch. The view was drawn by Corporal E.S. Lloyd and printed in color by J.H. Bufford of Boston, a firm known for its lithographed views of military scenes.
