Fort McHenry, the star-shaped stone fort guarding the approach to Baltimore, is the subject here, with the harbor entrance spread out before it. The fort became famous during the War of 1812, when British warships bombarded it in September 1814 and its defenders held. Francis Scott Key, watching from a nearby ship, saw the flag still flying the next morning and wrote the poem that became "The Star-Spangled Banner." Richard G. Harrison's engraving was made for the Analectic Magazine, so it shows the place as it was known to readers of the period.
