Loaded wagons and crates of shucked oysters crowd the loading area in this stereograph, which captures the shipping end of Baltimore's oyster trade around 1905. Baltimore was one of the largest oyster-processing ports on the East Coast in those years, and its packing houses sent shellfish by rail and wagon to markets across the country, often in iced containers. Stereographs like this were made as pairs of nearly identical photographs viewed through a hand-held stereoscope, which gave viewers a three-dimensional sense of the busy scene. The card is part of the Library of Congress collection of 1900s stereographs.
