Oyster luggers tied up at a Baltimore pier, their catch being hauled ashore, make up the subject of this glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced a large body of commercial views of American towns and waterfronts in the early 1900s. Baltimore's harbor was one of the busiest oyster ports on the East Coast, and the sharp-bowed sailing luggers that worked the Chesapeake were built to dredge beds in shallow water and carry their catch back to the city's wharves. The date is an estimate, placed around 1905, and the scene captures a working waterfront that was soon changed by steam power and mechanized packing.
