The Calvert Building was an office block in downtown Baltimore, and this 8 by 10 inch glass negative records it at about 1906. That date falls only a couple of years after the Great Baltimore Fire of February 1904, which destroyed much of the city's commercial core, so the view captures a downtown in the middle of rebuilding. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made commercial views of American cities for travel and trade markets, produced the negative. Its office buildings show the taller, steel-framed commercial architecture that was reshaping American city centers at the turn of the century.
