Light Street, photographed looking north, runs toward the harbor, where the street met the piers and wharves that lined Baltimore's waterfront. Carts and wagons stand along the roadway, the kind of horse-drawn traffic that moved freight between ships and warehouses before motor trucks became common. The negative was made around 1906, a few years after the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904 destroyed much of the downtown core and the city began rebuilding. It is one of the large 8 by 10 inch glass plates made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American cities and landscapes for sale in the early twentieth century.
