Unloading a banana steamer at a Baltimore pier is the subject of this glass-plate negative, one of the many scenes the Detroit Publishing Company made of working waterfronts around 1905. Baltimore was among the busiest fruit-import ports on the East Coast, and its harbor handled large shipments of bananas arriving by steamer from Central America and the Caribbean. Crews moved the fruit off the holds in bunches and crates, and the work was done by hand on the wharves. The Detroit company, known for its commercial views of the country, sold images like this to railroads and publishers who wanted to show American industry at work.
