Shaded by its namesake evergreens, The Firs in New Baltimore, a lakeside village in Macomb County, Michigan, is the focus of this view, taken between 1901 and 1910. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed towns, resorts and landscapes across the country and sold the results as souvenir views and postcards, made the picture on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate. The title's "under the firs" suggests the photographer wanted the trees to frame the scene, a common choice in early resort photography, when pleasant grounds were a selling point.
