The view from the Emerson Tower is what sets this glass-plate negative apart from the other Baltimore cityscapes on the board. The Emerson Tower was a landmark of the Emerson Bromo-Seltzer company, whose headquarters and bottling works stood in the city, and its height gave photographers a rare elevated vantage over the streets, rooftops and harbor approaches. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced this 8 x 10 inch negative sometime between 1910 and 1920, sold views like this to travelers and publishers eager to show American cities as bustling centers of commerce. The plate was later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado and entered the Library of Congress collection in 1949.
