A street vendor selling chestnuts on a Baltimore street is the subject of this image, preserved on a glass dry plate negative measuring 7 by 5 inches. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced and sold photographic views of American towns and cities, listed the scene in its 1906 catalog, so the picture was likely made in the years just before that. Roasted chestnuts were a common winter street food in American cities at the time, often sold from portable stoves to passersby. The scene offers a useful glimpse of the small trades that filled city streets in the early twentieth century.
