The title names a place called The Firs in New Baltimore, Michigan, a small town on the shore of Lake St. Clair, and the photograph centers on the trees themselves. Between 1901 and 1910, when this glass negative was made, lakeside towns north of Detroit drew city families for summer outings, and the Detroit Publishing Company produced views of such scenes to sell as travel souvenirs. The large 8 by 10 inch plate records fine detail in the branches and ground that smaller formats often lose. The record does not say who owned The Firs, so its exact history remains unclear.
