Few pictures show a small Maryland town street so directly after a storm, and this stereo card records Baltimore Street in Cumberland the morning after a snowfall dated April 10, 1862. Cumberland sat at the western terminus of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, which made it a valuable and often contested link during the Civil War. The card was made by a local amateur using the wet collodion process, which required coating and exposing glass plates before they dried. It was then circulated through an amateur exchange club, one of many networks that shared stereographs among hobbyists.
