Baltimore's Baltimore & Ohio Railroad operated some of the busiest coal piers on the city's waterfront, where trains hauled coal from the Appalachian mines to be loaded onto ships. This glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the files of the Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The title comes from data the agency recorded and has not been independently verified, so the exact pier and date remain uncertain. Still, the view conveys the scale of the port's coal trade.
