Here Winfield Scott Schley is shown aboard the U.S.S. Baltimore, a steel cruiser the Navy commissioned in 1890, and the record places the view in the officers' quarters. Schley had already earned national attention for the 1884 Greely relief expedition to the Arctic before he gained wider fame as a commander at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in 1898. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format work documented American ships, cities and landscapes around 1900, so the picture offers a glimpse of how a senior naval officer's living space looked at the turn of the century.
