Captain James McQueen Forsyth, whose name appears as "Forsythe" in the original title, is the subject of this 1900 glass-plate portrait, made while he commanded the cruiser U.S.S. Baltimore. The steel protected cruiser, launched in the late 1880s, spent much of its service in Asian waters, where American naval forces were busy protecting U.S. interests during a period of unrest in China. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm better known for its large-format views of cities, railroads, and landscapes across the United States.
