Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore opened in 1889 and became one of the country's leading medical institutions, known for its early commitment to research and for training physicians under a model that influenced American medical education. This photographic print comes from the Wittemann Collection, a large group of views assembled by a Philadelphia photographer and documenting buildings and institutions across the country. The record gives no date, so the exact year the picture was taken is uncertain, but the hospital's sober brick and stone architecture reflects the late nineteenth and early twentieth century building style that many American institutions of that era adopted.
