Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Baltimore institution that opened in 1889, is the subject here, shown as it stood around 1903 in one of the Detroit Publishing Company's views of American buildings and streets. The hospital was founded with a bequest from merchant and philanthropist Johns Hopkins and quickly became a model for modern medical care and teaching in the United States. The Detroit Publishing Company, active from the 1890s into the 1920s, sold such views to travelers and tourists, and its large collection now at the Library of Congress gives a useful record of how American cities and their landmarks looked in the early twentieth century.
