A steamer named the Joppa rides at anchor here, with smaller craft clustered around it on the water, a reminder of how much of Baltimore's commerce moved by water. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year is unknown. Still, the picture captures the harbor's working life, when steamboats carried passengers and freight between the city and the towns of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. Steamboat traffic was central to Baltimore's economy through the nineteenth century, and scenes like this one show how crowded and busy the waterfront was before motor vehicles and rail reshaped the port.
