Pay day on the Baltimore waterfront, with the steamship Bodo named in the record as the vessel at the pier, sets this scene apart from general views of the port. Around 1905, Baltimore was one of the busiest Atlantic ports, and stevedores who loaded and unloaded cargo were commonly paid at the wharf, so the picture records a routine but rarely photographed part of dock labor. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American cities and landscapes for decades, made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, and two close variants survive, suggesting the photographer exposed more than one plate of the same moment.
