Rising from the center of Mount Vernon Place, this 1902 view shows a monument that was among the first in the country dedicated to George Washington. Its fluted Doric column of granite, topped by a statue of the general, was begun with a cornerstone laid in 1815 and completed in 1829, and the architect Robert Mills drew the design. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the United States around 1900, recorded the plaza as the city's formal civic center at a time when Baltimore's stately row of houses and iron fencing still framed the column.
