Rising above the streets of Baltimore, the Battle Monument honors the residents who defended the city during the British assault of September 1814, the engagement that ended the British advance on the city and inspired Francis Scott Key's "Defence of Fort M'Henry." Architect Maximilian Godefroy designed the fluted Doric column, which was completed in 1825 and is one of the earliest large monuments to the War of 1812. John Rubens Smith, an English-born topographical artist working in America, drew this view in 1828, with pencil and blue and gray wash, recording a civic landmark only a few years old and the everyday life of the city around it.
