The flag shown here has 36 stars, the arrangement in use after Nevada entered the Union on October 31, 1864, and retained until Nebraska was admitted in 1867. Printed in color from woodcut blocks on linen, it reflects the wartime and postwar taste for patriotic images meant to be hung and displayed. Its date range places it in the years when the nation was closing the Civil War and debating how to reunite, when the flag stood as a powerful symbol of that unity.
