Stars and Stripes rise above a cluster of blossoms here, a pairing common on patriotic postcards of the early twentieth century. The title points to the Star-Spangled Banner, the flag that flew over Fort McHenry in Baltimore during the British bombardment of September 1814 and inspired Francis Scott Key's poem, which became the national anthem in 1931. Cards like this were mailed to mark Independence Day and other patriotic occasions, turning a national symbol into a sentimental greeting. The flowers soften the martial theme, showing how such imagery was designed to appeal to ordinary households.
