The title refers to the flag that flew over Fort McHenry in Baltimore during the British bombardment of September 1814, a sight that moved lawyer Francis Scott Key to write a poem he first called "Defence of Fort M'Henry." Key set his verses to a popular British drinking tune, and the result spread widely as a patriotic song throughout the 19th century. Congress made it the national anthem in 1931. Images on this theme often blend the flag with the wartime scene and the ideals the song came to represent.
