Percy Moran's c. 1913 color halftone shows Francis Scott Key, the lawyer and amateur poet who wrote the words that became "The Star-Spangled Banner" after watching the bombardment of Fort McHenry in September 1814. Moran was a painter known for sentimental, carefully staged scenes of American history, and this print reproduces his romanticized view of Key as a patriotic figure rather than a documentary portrait. Printed in color by halftone, the image was made for wide circulation in the early twentieth century, when the anthem was gaining its official status and schoolbooks, calendars and patriotic prints kept Key's story in public view.
