Hail! Glorious Banner of Our Land," with its subtitle "Spirit of the Union," puts the flag at the heart of its appeal. Issued around 1861, the first year of the Civil War, this sheet music cover was a color lithograph printed by Gibson & Co. of Cincinnati, a city with a busy printing trade. Publishers used bright, eye-catching covers like this one to sell patriotic songs to households that wanted to show loyalty as the nation divided. The copyright was registered to Mrs. Mary Farrell Moore, a reminder that women also held rights in the wartime music business.
