Sheet music covers like this one were a common way to sell patriotic songs in the early months of the Civil War. This color lithograph serves as the title page for "All Hail to the Flag of Freedom," published in Brooklyn by Skaats & Knaebel around 1861, with the stone printing credited to Ferd. Mayer & Co. of New York. Printed covers of this kind often combined a flag or military figures with the song's title to attract buyers. The subject reflects the surge of Union feeling that followed the attack on Fort Sumter in April 1861, when songs about the flag and the soldiers defending it sold widely in parlors and music shops.
