An engraving titled "Eagle & Flag," dating from roughly 1850 to 1869, pairs the American bald eagle with the national banner, two of the most familiar emblems of the young republic. Patriotic imagery like this was widely reproduced in the decades before the Civil War, when printed ornaments, certificates and broadsides carried the eagle and stars and stripes into homes and public life. Because the record gives no maker, the piece is best read as typical of its era: a compact, symbolic design meant to be recognized at a glance.
