Published in Philadelphia around 1861, the year the Civil War began, this sheet music cover pairs Francis Scott Key's anthem with a color lithograph of flags. Ch. Voss made the piano arrangement, J. Queen drew and lithographed the design, and P.S. Duval & Son printed it, while G. André & Co. issued the music. Key wrote the words in 1814 after the bombardment of Fort McHenry, and the song did not become the national anthem until 1931. Wartime publishers often used patriotic imagery like this to sell music to a public eager for symbols of the Union.
