The Star Spangled Banner, National Song is a hand-colored engraving that turns Francis Scott Key's 1814 verse into a visual anthem, with the flag and its stars given pride of place. The sheet was published in New York by William Dressler around 1861, the first year of the Civil War, when patriotic music and imagery circulated widely in print to rally support for the Union. Key wrote the lyrics after watching the bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812, and the song was not made the national anthem until 1931. Its appearance in a wartime print shows how closely the tune had become tied to American national feeling by the 1860s.
