Betsy Ross, shown here in a color lithograph of about 1908, is the seamstress traditionally credited with sewing the first American flag, though historians have long debated that story. The print reproduces a painting by G. Liebscher, and its copyright notice names F.A. Schneider, the publisher behind the image. Its spelling of "Betsey" in the title reflects the caption as it was printed, a small detail that hints at how loosely the legend was handled in popular images of the period. Around 1908, the Ross story was being retold widely in schoolbooks and patriotic displays, and images like this one helped fix her as a symbol of domestic craft serving the nation.
