A signing card is the centerpiece of this poster, which asks viewers to be patriotic and sign their country's pledge to save food. Paul Stahr designed it around 1918, and the W.F. Powers Co. printed it. It was issued by the U.S. Food Administration, the wartime agency led by Herbert Hoover that encouraged Americans to voluntarily conserve wheat, meat, sugar, and fats for troops and Allied relief. Rather than imposing rationing, the agency relied on civic duty, and posters like this one carried that message into shops, schools, and homes across the country.
