Few wartime posters pair a pledge of allegiance with a call for silence, yet this one, titled "I Pledge Allegiance And Silence About The War," does just that, pointing to the loose talk that officials feared could help the enemy. Dated January 1943, it was printed in color by silkscreen under the War Services program of the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project in Louisiana, which hired artists to make posters supporting the war effort. Thomas A. Byrne's design is a reminder that wartime messages often asked civilians to keep their opinions and information to themselves as well as to buy bonds or enlist.
