Aimed at women on Long Island, this silkscreen poster announces a Home Defense Day of exhibits, demonstrations, lectures, drills and music. It dates from 1941, before the United States entered World War II, when local governments were beginning to recruit civilians for defense work. The Works Progress Administration's New York State art project produced it, and the flag in the design makes the patriotic appeal plain. The date stamped on the back, May 14, 1941, places it in the spring of that year.
