Two children stand dressed as Uncle Sam, the lanky, goateed national personification that American illustrators had been drawing since the War of 1812, and the caption across the card announces it as "The day we celebrate!" Holiday postcards like this one were produced in large numbers in the early twentieth century, when the lithographic printing process made cheap, brightly colored cards easy to mail. Cards of this kind often recycled familiar patriotic symbols such as stars, flags and red-white-and-blue borders, and they show how the Fourth of July was turned into a mass-market, sentimental holiday for families sending greetings across the country.
