Uncle Sam turns 142 in this color lithograph, a tongue-in-cheek calendar joke that counts the nation's years from the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 up to 1918. The advertisement was printed for United Cigars, which used the holiday to sell tobacco, and the wartime date places it in the middle of World War I, when patriotic imagery was everywhere. Look for how the poster turns a national symbol into a friendly, aging birthday guest, a common approach to selling consumer goods during that period.
