Few titles on this board are as blunt as "Patriotic," and the picture lives up to it: it is a straightforward appeal to national feeling rather than a record of any single event. Images of this kind were common in the decades when American printmakers and illustrators turned the flag, the eagle and the national colors into everyday decoration, sold to families who wanted a visible sign of loyalty. Pieces like this one show how patriotic sentiment moved out of official ceremony and into parlors, schools and shop windows, where it could be seen daily.
