Stamped greetings like this one were a staple of American holiday mail in the early twentieth century, when color lithography made cheap, cheerful cards easy to produce in large runs. This example pairs the Liberty Bell, a flag, and an eagle, three of the most recognizable symbols of the young republic, to mark Independence Day. The Liberty Bell, cast in Philadelphia and tied to the 1776 Declaration, had by then become a national emblem, which is why it appears so often on patriotic ephemera. Notice how the design packs its symbols into a small space, a common approach for postcards meant to be read at a glance.
